Peppermint Patties

My five year old daughter ran up to me while vintage shopping together, asking for a quarter - a peppermint pattie machine caught her eye on the front counter. I obliged, and after snacking I told her that visiting vintage shops was something I used to do with my own mother before she passed away. "Did your mom like mint-chocolate?" she asked. I told her that it was one of her very favorite candies, and she smiled. My daughter expressed she wished she could give a peppermint to my mom, so I told her if she'd like I'd give her another quarter and she could put one on top of the brass box with mom's ashes at home. As she turned the wheel, out came not just one but two peppermint patties. My girl got a second piece of candy, and I got the treat of imagining, just perhaps, a little magic exists in the world and somehow my mother was able to spoil her granddaughter with an extra sweet...as she would so do if she was here today.
